In addition to the coursework, the Board of Educational Examiners (BoEE) requires the following to issue a Coaching certificate.

  1. Applicants must be over 18 years old.
  2. If under 20, then high school transcripts are required.
  3. Complete the BoEE Application
    1. $85 Est. Fee
    2. Access at https://boee.iowa.gov/licenses/you-begin
      1. Begin your application right away even before classes are complete.
      2. Results can take 6-8 weeks. The minute a license is approved, an automatic e-mail is sent to coach and their license information is made public record at Iowa Department of Education website.
      3. Follow all instructions on the BoEE site for a new or renewed license.
  4. FBI Background Check
    1. $75 Est. Fee
    2. Order the packet from the (BoEE) website at https://boee.iowa.gov/background-checks or call their main number to make an appointment to go to their office to have your fingerprints taken electronically. That number is 515.281.3245.
    3. Follow the instructions on the BoEE site for background checks.
  5. Complete a Concussion course
    A free, online course offered through the National Federation of State High School Association, which can be taken at any time by the applicant, at https://nfhslearn.com/courses/concussion-in-sports-2.
  6. CPR Certification
    The BoEE has adopted amendments to the Iowa Administrative Code that will require current CPR certification for certain coaches - effective immediately. This new rule will not affect teachers who already hold a coaching endorsement on their teaching license.
