Although it may seem like violent crimes and horrific homicides have been more prevalent in recent decades and occur most often in major cities, that’s not always true. Sioux City has seen its fair share of crime and murder, dating back to the late 1800s. In recent years, society has exploded with heightened levels of interest in the genre of true crime. Humans are naturally drawn to and have a morbid curiosity when it comes to tales that are “stranger than fiction.” Accounts of murder often hit a nerve and beg us to assemble the pieces to discover what makes a criminal snap and how we might protect ourselves and loved ones. Sarah Enright, Local History Librarian Specialist at the Sioux City Public Library and a true crime fan herself, will present several narratives of such homicides from Sioux City’s past using archived newspaper clippings, microfilm, and web resources. Participants are encouraged to share their memories and comments as the cases are discussed.
