Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Course The goal of the Basic Life Support (BLS) Course is to train participants to save lives of victims in cardiac arresst through high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The American Heart Association (AHA) designed the BLS Course to teach healthcare professionals how to perform high-quality CPR individually or as part of a team. BLS skills are applicable to any healthcare setting. BLS students will learn rescue techniques for adults, children, and infants. At the end of the BLS Course, students will be able to: - Describe the importance of high-quality CPR and its impact on survival - Describe all of the steps of the Chain of Survival - Apply the BLS concepts of the Chain of Survival - Recognize the signs of someone needing CPR - Perform high-quality CPR for an adult - Describe the importance of early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) - Demonstrate the appropriate use of an AED - Provide effective ventilation by using a barrier device - Perform high-quality CPR for a child - Perform high-quality CPR for an infant - Describe the importance of teams in multirescue resuscitation - Perform as an effective team member during multirescue CPR - Describe the technique for relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for an adult or child - Describe the technique for relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for an infant Course includes skills practice, skills testing, and a written test. This course is designed for individuals who anticipate working with an ambulance service, hospital emergency department, fire department, police department, mining operation, or in other occupational fields where medical emergencies are common. Course content includes but is not limited to an overview of anatomy and physiology; medical terminology; patient assessment; basic life support in relation to cardiac arrest, trauma, and other medical emergencies. Instruction in light extrication of the injured is additionally covered. This course also provides the student an opportunity to apply cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills in a supervised clinical or field setting.
Prerequisites: Students must be 17 years of age at the time of enrollment of the course, have a health physical and immunizations up to date, have a current AHA BLS provider card, have successfully completed the Mandatory Reporter Course, and Instructor consent.
