WITCC, Smithfield Foods Sign First Cohort of Apprentices

WITCC, Smithfield Foods Sign First Cohort of ApprenticesSmithfield Foods, Inc. and Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) are kicking off an innovative maintenance technician apprenticeship program with a signing ceremony for the first cohort at WITCC in Sioux City. The ceremony will occur on Friday, August 13, 2021 at 11:30am (4647 Stone Blvd., Wells Fargo Room L110, Entrance 14, Parking Lot 4). 

The newly developed four-year maintenance technician apprenticeship program offers hands-on training to apprentices at Smithfield’s Sioux City facility as they work toward a Technical Associate Degree from WITCC. The first cohort of the program consists of up to 15 apprentices made up of Smithfield employees from Sioux City and surrounding towns. Student apprentices receive free college tuition, a federal journeyman’s license, salary and benefits as they progress to full-time employees. 

The apprentices will train in WITCC’s new Industrial Training Center. This 3,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art simulation lab replicates a genuine industrial processing plant floor. Apprentices gain relevant real-world experience with production floor plant equipment and systems used in the industry. 

"We’re excited to partner with WITCC and welcome our newest cohort of apprentices to our Smithfield Family," said Clarence Scott, maintenance and engineering talent acquisition specialist for Smithfield Foods. “This program combines WITCC’s educational programs with hands-on learning from Smithfield’s skilled technicians to develop and support the next generation of manufacturing professionals."  

Additionally, Carmen Wilson, Division Chair for Corporate Training at WITCC’s Corporate College says, "We are fortunate to partner with Smithfield Foods, and look forward to developing and supporting a pipeline of trained maintenance professionals into our local workforce." 

In 2019 Smithfield launched its inaugural maintenance technician apprenticeship program in Goldsboro, NC and has since expanded the initiative to include partnerships with colleges near the company’s facilities in Mo., Neb. and Iowa.
